Test N: Air Bag Warning Indicator Always/Never On
WARNING:
To avoid accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury, backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any air bag restraint system components. Disconnect battery and auxiliary power supplies (if equipped). Wait one minute for backup power supply energy to deplete.
NOTE:
Air bag diagnostic monitor may also be referred to as air bag diagnostic module, Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) or Restraints Control Module (RCM).
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to ON position while observing air bag indicator prove out. If air bag indicator prove out is normal, system is okay. If air bag indicator stays on, go to next step. If air bag indicator does not come on during prove out, go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Deactivate air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect Restraint Control Module harness connector C1041. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and air bag diagnostic monitor harness connector C1041 terminal No. 20 (Black/Yellow wire). See Fig 1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If air bag indicator illuminates, repair bag system concern. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. If air bag indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 14 and air bag diagnostic monitor harness connector C1041 terminal No. 20. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 6. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and air bag diagnostic monitor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor 28-pin harness connector C1041. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If air bag indicator illuminates, go to next step. If air bag indicator does not illuminate, repair air bag system problem. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 14 (Black/Yellow wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Yellow wire and test system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
