Test J: Yellow Brake (Abs) Warning Indicator Always/Never On

NOTE: ABS warning indicator may also be referred to as anti-lock brake indicator.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to ON position. Observe ABS warning indicator. If ABS indicator proves out, system is okay at this time. If ABS indicator does not prove out and stays on constantly, go to next step. If ABS indicator does not prove out and never turns on, go to step  4.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module harness connector C135. ABS module is located in left front of engine compartment, near air cleaner. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe ABS warning indicator. If indicator illuminates, go to next step. If indicator does not illuminate, diagnose ABS. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and ABS module harness connector C135 terminal No. 15 (Dark Green wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step  7. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Green wire between instrument cluster and ABS module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module harness connector C135. ABS module is located in left front of engine compartment, near air cleaner. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and ABS module harness connector C135 terminal No. 15 (Dark Green wire). See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If ABS warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If ABS warning indicator illuminates, diagnose ABS problem. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Measure resistance of Dark Green wire between ABS module harness connector C135 terminal No. 15 and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 18. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Green wire between instrument cluster and ABS module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  6. Ensure ignition switch is in the LOCK position. Measure voltage between ground and ABS module harness connector C135 terminal No. 15 (Dark Green wire). If any voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire and test system operation. If no voltage is present, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
