Test Z: Check Fuel Cap Indicator Is Inoperative/Always On
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC P0457 is retrieved, go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no related DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select instrument cluster WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger active command ALL LAMPS on and off. Observe the check fuel cap indicator. If check fuel cap indicator does not illuminate and turn off as commanded, go to next step. If check fuel cap indicator does illuminate and turn off as commanded, go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check instrument cluster for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
