Test O: High Beam Indicator Inoperative

  1. Verify headlight high beam operation. If high beams work correctly, go to next step. If high beams do not operate correctly, repair high beam circuit. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Retest system operation.
  2. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Turn headlights ON. Place multifunction switch in high beam position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 5 (Light Green/Black wire). See Figure. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, go to step  4.
  3. Turn headlights to OFF position. Disconnect multifunction switch harness connector C202a. Measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 5 (Light Green/Black wire) and multifunction switch harness connector C202a terminal No. 7 (Gray/Orange wire). See Figure and Fig 1 . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 5 (Light Green/Black wire). Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, replace multifunction switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - EXCURSION & F250-F550 article. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Light Green/Black wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c terminal No. 15 (Black wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and harness connectors that are not connected correctly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose harness connectors. Retest system operation. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear any DTCs. If problem exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
