Description & Operation
Instrument cluster is a Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC). HEC is equipped with fuel level, oil pressure and temperature gauges, speedometer, tachometer, transmission temperature gauge (A/T only) and voltmeter (M/T only). When ignition switch is turned to ON position, SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), air bag warning indicator, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) warning indicator, charge system warning indicator, safety belt warning indicator, theft indicator (Excursion), WAIT TO START (diesel) and WATER IN FUEL (diesel) indicators will illuminate momentarily for display prove out. Gauges need no calibration and are not individually replaceable. Cluster must be replaced as a unit. Two versions of instrument cluster are available. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
Fuel sending unit is a variable resistor-type that has low resistance when fuel level is low and high resistance when fuel level is high. Water temperature sensor has high resistance when water temperature is low and low resistance when temperature is high. Oil pressure indicator sending unit contact points open when oil pressure drops below 6 psi (42 kPa). Vehicle speed signal comes from ABS module. SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator illuminates when PCM sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Red BRAKE warning indicator indicates low brake fluid level, brake system malfunction or parking brake not fully released. Yellow ABS warning indicator indicates malfunction, or deactivation of ABS. The WATER IN FUEL (diesel) indicator illuminates when 0.2 pint (100cc) of water has accumulated in fuel filter/water separator. Diesel vehicles receive tachometer signal from generator. Non-diesel vehicles receive tachometer signal from Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
