Instrument Panel

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving instrument panel or steering column components. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Do not apply electrical power to any component on instrument panel or steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Remove driver's and passenger's air bags. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE and PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in AIR BAG RESTRAINTS SYSTEM article in RESTRAINTS.
  2. On excursion only, remove floor console. See FLOOR CONSOLE .
  3. On M/T, remove 4 screws on gearshift lever boot and position it out of the way. Remove the 2 bolts connecting upper and lower gearshift lever and remove upper gearshift lever.
  4. Disconnect the group of 5 electrical connectors located underneath the brake master cylinder in engine compartment. See Fig 1. Feed loose connectors and wiring harness into passenger compartment. Disconnect Central Junction Box (CJB) supply voltage cable from junction block in engine compartment. See Fig 2. Remove one nut from connection at junction block and feed cable into passenger compartment.

  5. Detach push pin-type harness locators from brake pedal bracket and PCM bracket. See Fig 3. Remove the driver's and passenger's side scuff plates. Remove the driver's and passenger's side lower A-pillar trim panel push pin-type retainers and remove the trim panels.

  6. On Excursion only, lift carpet enough to access floor console wiring harness. Detach wiring harness from locator and position out of the way.
  7. Detach driver's and passenger's side weather stripping enough to allow access for instrument panel removal.
  8. Remove antenna base. See ANTENNA BASE . Disconnect cable from antenna base. Remove 3 nuts, 3 screws, and 2 push pin-type retainers from passenger's side inner fenderwell and position inner fenderwell aside. Detach grommet on firewall from firewall and push grommet and antenna cable into passenger compartment.
  9. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, release retainers on lower instrument panel cover and remove cover. Remove upper bolt from CJB and release locking tab. See Fig 4. Lower CJB enough to access electrical connectors on back of CJB. Disconnect electrical connectors and in-line connector. See Fig 5. Remove 2 nuts from parking brake release handle and remove parking brake release handle.

  10. Reinstall CJB leaving all electrical connectors disconnected. Disconnect parking brake switch electrical connector. Disconnect brake pedal position switch electrical connector. Disconnect clutch pedal position switch electrical connector (M/T only). Disconnect electrical connector located in steering column opening. See Fig 6. If equipped, disconnect adjustable pedals motor electrical connectors.

  11. Remove pinch bolt from upper steering column shaft and disconnect shaft. Detach transmission shift cable from shift lever and remove steering column bracket.
  12. Remove air bag diagnostic monitor trim cover. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor electrical connector. Disconnect A/C blend door electrical connector. Disconnect vacuum harness connector. Ensure glove compartment is completely closed.
  13. Disconnect electrical connectors and ground bolt from passenger's side lower "A" pillar. See Fig 7. Remove inner trim panel from side of instrument panel on passenger's side.

  14. Remove trim cover from autolamp sensor located in center of dash panel and disconnect autolamp electrical connector. See Fig 8. Remove 3 upper instrument cluster bolt covers and remove 3 upper instrument panel bolts. See Fig 9.

  15. Remove trim panel from driver's side of instrument panel. See Fig 10. Remove center support bolt from driver's side of instrument panel. See Fig 11. Remove upper and lower instrument panel retaining bolts from passenger's side of instrument panel. See Fig 12. Remove 2 instrument panel retaining bolts from driver's side of instrument panels. See Fig 13. With the help of an assistant, remove instrument panel assembly from vehicle.

  16. To install, reverse removal procedure and tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
