  1. Remove the four shift lever boot screws. Pull the shift lever boot upward to access the shift housing.

  2. Remove the upper gearshift lever.

  3. Remove the lower shift lever boot.

  4. Remove the lower gearshift and shift housing.


  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. If the transmission is being disassembled, drain the transmission fluid.
  3. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM article.
  4. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES article.

    NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft to the transfer case flange. Remove and discard the driveshaft bolts.
  5. Disconnect the rear driveshaft and position it aside.

  6. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE article.

  7. Disconnect the fuel lines from the transmission.
  8. Remove any power take-off (PTO) equipment, if equipped.

  9. Using the special tool, support the transmission.
    • Securely strap the jack to the transmission.

  10. Remove the RH crossmember nuts.

  11. Remove the LH crossmember bolts.
  12. Disconnect the wire harness from the crossmember.

  13. Remove the transmission mount nuts and the crossmember.

  14. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.

  15. Disconnect wiring harness from the transmission.

  16. Remove the clutch slave cylinder and position it aside.
    • Push the clutch slave cylinder inward, then rotate counterclockwise 45 degrees to remove.

  17. Disconnect the transmission cooling tubes.

  18. Remove the dust cover bolts.

  19. Remove the seven transmission-to-engine bolts.
  20. Remove the transmission.
    • Move the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch, then lower from the vehicle.
