Transmission Overheating

DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINES - TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING

Possible Component Reference/Action
260 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System 
  • CARRY OUT On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) tests. REFER to the INTRODUCTION article for diagnosis and testing of the PCM. For diagnosing TCC  solenoid, GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diagnosing PCA  , GO to PINPOINT TEST E . REPAIR as required. CLEAR the DTCs, ROAD TEST the vehicle and RERUN the OBD  test.
  • PCM, vehicle wiring harnesses, Pressure Control Solenoid A (PCA), Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid
Transmission Fluid 
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK transmission fluid level and adjust as necessary. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  in this service information.
  • CARRY OUT the Transmission Fluid Condition Check. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  in this service information.
  • Condition
Fluid Pump Assembly 
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • TIGHTEN to specification.
  • Gasket damaged
  • INSTALL a new gasket.
  • Porosity, cross leaks, cup plug missing, plugged hole gears cracked or seized
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • If damaged or parts are missing, INSTALL a new seal or pump assembly. If misassembled, reassemble correctly.
  • Control valves and springs or seal damaged, misassembled or stuck
Transmission Case 
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Case vent damaged
Torque Converter 
  • Torque converter One-Way Clutch (OWC) seized
  • REMOVE the transmission. INSPECT for damage. REFER to TORQUE CONVERTER CONTAMINATION INSPECTION  in this service information. If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria for replacement or is damaged, INSTALL a new or remanufactured torque converter.
  • REMOVE the transmission. INSPECT for damage. REFER to TORQUE CONVERTER CONTAMINATION INSPECTION  in this service information. If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria for replacement or is damaged, INSTALL a new or remanufactured torque converter.
  • Excessive torque converter slip detected
Other 
  • Restriction in transmission cooling system
  • Excessive trailer tow load
  • REFER to the appropriate towing manual.
  • Engine driveability concerns
  • Vehicle heat shields missing or damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Vehicle air flow restricted
