Torque Converter Always Applied/Stalls Vehicle

DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINES - TORQUE CONVERTER ALWAYS APPLIED/STALLS VEHICLE

Possible Component Reference/Action
251 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System 
  • CARRY OUT On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) tests. REFER to the INTRODUCTION article for diagnosis and testing of the PCM. For diagnosing TCC  solenoid, GO to PINPOINT TEST A . REPAIR as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs, ROAD TEST the vehicle and RERUN the OBD  test.
  • PCM, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid
Incorrect Line Pressures 
  • CHECK pressure at line tap. CARRY OUT Line Pressure Test. REFER to SPECIAL TESTING PROCEDURES  in this service information. FOLLOW the pressure diagnosis test as required.
  • High TCC  pressure
Solenoid Body Assembly 
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • TIGHTEN to specification.
  • Filter gasket damaged
  • INSTALL a new filter gasket.
  • Contamination
  • DISASSEMBLE and CLEAN.
  • If damaged or parts are missing, INSTALL a new solenoid body assembly. If misassembled, reassemble correctly.
  • TCC  solenoid damaged, misassembled, missing, stuck or bore damaged. Manual valve damaged, misassembled, missing, stuck or bore damaged
Fluid Pump Assembly 
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • TIGHTEN to specification.
  • Gasket damaged
  • INSTALL a new gasket.
  • Porosity, cross leaks, cup plug missing, plugged hole
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Pump gears and/or gear pocket damaged
  • INSTALL a new pump.
  • INSPECT for damage. INSTALL a new seal or pump assembly.
  • Control valves, converter charge limit valve, converter pressure regulator valve springs or seals damaged, stuck or not assembled correctly
Torque Converter 
  • REMOVE the transmission. INSPECT for damage. REFER to TORQUE CONVERTER CONTAMINATION INSPECTION  in this service information. If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria for replacement or is damaged, INSTALL a new or remanufactured torque converter.
  • Internal failure preventing the torque converter from applying
