DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINES - HARSH 3-2 COAST DOWNSHIFT IN TOW/HAUL MODE OR TO MANUAL SECOND

Possible Component Reference/Action
248 - ROUTINE 
Powertrain Control System 
  • CARRY OUT On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) tests. REFER to the INTRODUCTION article for diagnosis and testing of the PCM. For diagnosing SSPCB  , SSPCC  , SSPCE  and TCC  solenoid, GO to PINPOINT TEST A . For diagnosing TFT  sensor, GO to PINPOINT TEST B . For diagnosing TSS  /intermediate shaft speed sensor, GO to PINPOINT TEST D . REPAIR as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs, ROAD TEST the vehicle and RERUN the OBD  test.
  • PCM, vehicle wiring harnesses, transmission internal harness, Shift Solenoid Pressure Control B (SSPCB), Shift Solenoid Pressure Control C (SSPCC), Shift Solenoid Pressure Control E (SSPCE), Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid, Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS)/intermediate shaft speed sensors, Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor, Power Take-Off (PTO) input
Transmission Fluid 
  • Incorrect level
  • CHECK transmission fluid level and adjust as necessary. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  in this service information.
  • CARRY OUT the Transmission Fluid Condition Check. REFER to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  in this service information.
  • Condition
Incorrect Line Pressures 
  • CHECK pressure at line tap. CARRY OUT Line Pressure Test. REFER to SPECIAL TESTING PROCEDURES  in this service information. FOLLOW the pressure diagnosis test as required.
  • High pressures
Solenoid Body Assembly 
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • TIGHTEN to specification.
  • Filter gasket damaged
  • INSTALL a new filter gasket.
  • Contamination
  • DISASSEMBLE and CLEAN.
  • If damaged or parts are missing, INSTALL a new solenoid body assembly. If misassembled, reassemble correctly.
  • SSPCB  , SSPCC  , SSPCE  , Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) solenoid(s) damaged, stuck or bore damaged; manual valve damaged, stuck or bore damaged
Coast Clutch Assembly 
  • Seals, piston damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Friction elements damaged or worn
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Return springs damaged
Overdrive Clutch Assembly 
  • Seals, piston damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Filtered orifice damaged, missing, not seating, off location
  • INSPECT for mislocation, poor seating, damage. INSTALL a new pump if damaged.
  • Friction elements damaged or worn
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Return springs damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Snap ring for One-Way Clutch (OWC) and/or return spring not seated or damaged
Intermediate Clutch Assembly 
  • Seals, piston damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Filtered orifice damaged, missing, not seating, off location
  • INSPECT for mislocation, poor seating, damage. INSTALL a new center support if damaged.
  • Friction elements damaged or worn
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Return springs damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Snap ring for OWC  and/or return spring not seated or damaged
Reverse Clutch Assembly 
  • Seals, piston damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Filtered orifice damaged, missing, not seating, off location
  • INSPECT for mislocation, poor seating, damage. INSTALL a new center support if damaged.
  • Friction elements damaged or worn
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Return springs damaged
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • REPAIR as necessary.
  • Snap ring for OWC  and/or return spring not seated or damaged
Torque Converter 
  • REMOVE the transmission. INSPECT for damage. REFER to TORQUE CONVERTER CONTAMINATION INSPECTION  in this service information. If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria for replacement or is damaged, INSTALL a new or remanufactured torque converter.
