Oil Pan - Lower, Partial Body Lift: Removal

NOTE: Position a suitable protective material in front of the charge air cooler (CAC) or damage to the CAC may occur.
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body partially lifted. If the vehicle body cannot be partially lifted, refer to Oil Pan - Lower, Body On .

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position the vehicle on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  3. Disconnect the windshield washer hose.

  5. Disconnect the underhood light electrical connector and pin-type retainers. Position the wiring aside.

    NOTE: Mark the location of the hinges prior to removing the hood.
  7. With the help of an assistant, disconnect the hood lift rods. Remove the bolts and the hood.

  9. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the cable-to-cable union. For additional information, refer to PARKING BRAKE AND ACTUATION article.
  10. Remove the parking brake cable from the frame bracket.

  12. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the oil.

  14. Install the drain plug.
    • Tighten to 44 Nm (32 lb-ft).

  16. Remove the exhaust downpipe retaining nuts and bolts.

  18. Remove and discard the RH engine mount retaining nuts.

  20. Remove and discard the LH engine mount retaining nuts.

  22. Remove and discard the transmission mount retaining nuts.

  24. Remove the retaining nut for the transmission cooler tubes. Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes from the stud.

  26. If equipped, disconnect the transmission cooler tubes at the external transmission filter.
    • Plug or cap the openings as needed.

  28. If equipped, remove the retaining clips for the transmission cooler tubes.

  30. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission cooler tubes at the external transmission filter.
    • Plug or cap the openings as needed.

  32. If equipped, remove the transmission-to-engine bolts and the external transmission filter and bracket.

  34. Remove the bolt and position aside the ground strap.

  36. Disconnect the retaining clip for the transmission cooler tubes at the frame.

    NOTE: Mark the location of the 5 longer bolts.
  38. Remove as many of the oil pan bolts as possible.
  39. NOTE: RH side shown, LH side similar.
  40. If equipped, remove the bolts and the running boards.

    NOTE: Use hand tools only to remove the body bolts. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the cage nut.
  42. Remove and discard the body bolts.

  44. Disconnect the retaining clip for the power steering cooler tube at the frame.

  46. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING article.
  47. Remove the upper cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  48. Vehicles with dual generator 

  49. Remove the secondary generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  50. Vehicles with brake vacuum pump (belt driven) 

  51. Remove the brake vacuum pump. For additional information, refer to POWER BRAKE ACTUATION article.
  52. All vehicles 

  53. Disconnect the brake tubes from the retaining clip.

  55. Remove the retaining nuts. Position the bracket and master cylinder aside.

  57. Remove and discard the bolt and disconnect the steering shaft.

  59. Position the fender covers between the cab and the body.
  60. Chock the tires.
  61. WARNING: Securely strap the cab to the lift using an appropriate tool. If the cab is not correctly secured, it could shift or fall. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
  62. Position the hoist to the body. Using the special tool, secure the body to the hoist.

  64. Install the special tool on the front end accessory drive (FEAD) bracket.

    NOTE: Use a lifting crane and load leveler rated at a minimum of 907 kg (2,000 lb) or damage to the vehicle may occur.
  66. Position the heavy duty lifting crane with a commercially available load leveler and attach the chains to the front of the engine.

    NOTE: If the engine or body is raised too quickly, you will not get the lift required to remove the oil pan. Check the height several times while lifting.
  68. With the help of an assistant, lift the engine and raise the body 101.6 mm (4 in) at the same time. Check the clearance between the cab mount and the body.
  69. Support the engine with jackstands or other suitable support devices.
  70. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts and position the oil pan to access the oil pick up tube bolts.
  71. Remove the bolts for the oil pick up tube and place the tube in the oil pan. Remove the oil pan.
    • Remove and discard the oil pick up tube O-ring seal.
  72. Remove and discard the press-in-place gasket.
