Oil Pan - Lower, Body On: Removal

NOTE: Position a suitable protective material in front of the charge air cooler (CAC) or damage to the CAC may occur.
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body partially lifted. If the vehicle body can be partially lifted, refer to Oil Pan - Lower, Partial Body Lift .

All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cables. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  2. Remove the turbocharger. Carry out the Turbocharger-Body On procedure. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - TURBOCHARGER article.
  3. Remove the upper cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.

    4. Vehicles with dual generator 

  4. Remove the secondary generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.

    5. Vehicles with brake vacuum pump (belt driven) 

  5. Remove the brake vacuum pump. For additional information, refer to POWER BRAKE ACTUATION article.

    6. All vehicles 

  6. Disconnect the windshield washer hose.

  7. Disconnect the underhood light electrical connector and pin-type retainers. Position the wiring aside.

    NOTE: Mark the location of the hinges prior to removing the hood.
  8. With the help of an assistant, disconnect the hood lift rods. Remove the bolts and the hood.

  9. Disconnect the crankcase vent oil separator drain tube.

  10. Remove the bolts and the crankcase vent oil separator.
    • Remove and discard the press-in-place gasket.

  11. Disconnect the PCM electrical connector and wire retainer.

  12. Remove the glow plug module heat shield and push nuts.

  13. Disconnect the glow plug module electrical connectors.
    • Position the glow plug electrical connectors out from under the cowl.

  14. Remove the nuts and glow plug module.

  15. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation temperature (EGRT) sensor electrical connector from the glow plug bracket.

  16. Remove the EGR-oxidation catalytic converter (OC) pipe from the vehicle.

    NOTE: Engine removed from the vehicle for clarity.
  17. Remove the bolt and the retaining nuts for the high-pressure fuel injection pump heat shield. Remove the fuel tube bracket and position the ground strap.

  18. Remove the remaining 2 bolts and the high-pressure fuel injection pump heat shield.

  19. Remove the RH turbocharger inlet pipe.

  20. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the oil.

  21. Install the drain plug.
    • Tighten to 44 Nm (32 lb-ft).

  22. Remove and discard the RH engine mount retaining nuts.

  23. Remove and discard the 2 upper studs for the RH motor mount.

  24. Remove and discard the LH engine mount retaining nuts.

  25. Loosen the transmission mount retaining nuts.

  26. Remove the exhaust downpipe bolts.

  27. Remove the bolt and position aside the ground cable.

  28. Remove the retaining nut for the transmission cooler tubes. Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes from the stud.

  29. If equipped, disconnect the transmission cooler tubes at the external transmission filter.
    • Plug or cap the openings as needed.

  30. If equipped, remove the retaining clips for the transmission cooler tubes.

  31. If equipped, using the special tool, disconnect the transmission cooler tubes at the external transmission filter.
    • Plug or cap the openings as needed.

  32. If equipped, remove the transmission-to-engine bolts and the external transmission filter and bracket.

    NOTE: Mark the location of the 5 longer bolts.
  33. Remove as many of the oil pan bolts as possible.
  34. Install the special tool on the front end accessory drive (FEAD) bracket.

    NOTE: Use a lifting crane and load leveler rated at a minimum of 907 kg (2,000 lb) or damage to the vehicle may occur.
    NOTE: It will be necessary to position the exhaust downpipe aside to get the lift that is required to remove the oil pan.
  35. Position the heavy duty lifting crane with a commercially available load leveler and attach the chains to the front of the engine.

    NOTE: Make sure the exhaust downpipe is loose during the raising of the engine or damage to the vehicle may occur.
    NOTE: The engine will need kept level in order to remove the oil pan.
  36. Raise the lifting crane as needed to get the required lift to remove the oil pan.
  37. Support the engine with jackstands or other suitable support devices.
  38. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts and position the oil pan to access the oil pick up tube bolts.
  39. Remove the bolts for the oil pick up tube and place the tube in the oil pan. Remove the oil pan.
    • Remove and discard the oil pick up tube O-ring seal.
  40. Remove and discard the press-in-place gasket.
