PINPOINT TEST F: DTCs B2844 AND U2472 - IGNITION FAULT AND UNEXPECTED IGNITION STATE

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford Pickup, 2008 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2008 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
  1. F1 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Carry out the Ignition Switch Component Test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
    • Is the ignition switch OK? 
    1. YES  : For DTC U2472, go to  F2.

      For DTC B2844, go to  F4.

    2. NO  : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to Ignition Switch . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. F2 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC33 (VT/GN) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280A

    • Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-5, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side and SJB C2280A-3, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit CDC33 (VT/GN). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. F3 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC34 (WH/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280B

    • Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and SJB C2280B-45, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit CDC34 (WH/OG). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. F4 CHECK THE IGNITION CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS) Diode
    • Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250 (all vehicles)
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280A (all vehicles)
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280B (all vehicles)
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280E (all vehicles)
    • Disconnect: PCM C1232B (diesel with OTIS)
    • Disconnect: PCM C175T (gasoline only)
    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • SJB C2280A-3, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side.
      • SJB C2280A-4, circuit CDC32 (BN/YE), harness side.
      • SJB C2280B-45, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side.
      • SJB C2280E-8, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side (diesel engine vehicles without OTIS).
      • SJB C2280E-8, circuit CDC38 (WH/VT), harness side (diesel engine vehicles with OTIS and all gasoline engine vehicles).
    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  F5.
  5. F5 CHECK THE IGNITION CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • For all vehicles  , measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-1, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side and SJB C2280B-45, circuit CDC34 (WH/OG), harness side.

    • For all vehicles  , measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-5, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side and SJB C2280A-3, circuit CDC33 (VT/GN), harness side.

    • For diesel engine vehicles without OTIS  , measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-10, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and SJB C2280E-8, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side.

    • For diesel engine vehicles with OTIS and all gasoline vehicles  , measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-10, circuit CDC35 (BU/WH), harness side and the OTIS diode, input side.

    • For diesel engine vehicles with OTIS and all gasoline vehicles  , measure the resistance between OTIS diode, output side and SJB C2280E-8, circuit CDC38 (WH/VT), harness side.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : For vehicles equipped with OTIS, go to  F6.

      For vehicles not equipped with OTIS, go to  F7.

    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. F6 CHECK THE OTIS DIODE FOR A SHORT OR AN OPEN 
      NOTE: The diode should only have continuity in one direction.
    • Using the diode setting on the 73111 Automotive Meter, test the diode.
    • Is the diode OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new OTIS diode. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. F7 CHECK THE SJB CONNECTORS 
    • Check SJB connectors C2280A, C2280B and C2280E for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect: SJB C2280A (all vehicles)
    • Connect: SJB C2280B (all vehicles)
    • Connect: SJB C2280E (all vehicles)
    • Connect: PCM C1232B (diesel with OTIS)
    • Connect: PCM C175T (gasoline only)
    • Connect: Ignition Switch C250 (all vehicles)
    • Connect: Run/Start Relay (all vehicles)
    • Connect: OTIS Diode (diesel with OTIS and all gasoline vehicles)
    • Make sure the connectors are seated correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
