Removal & Installation (Parking Brake Shoes Except E450 & E550)
- On E250 and E350, remove hub assembly. See HUB ASSEMBLY (E250 & E350) .
- On all vehicles, raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove rear rotor. See REAR BRAKE ROTOR .
- Remove the brake shoe retracting spring. See Fig 1.
- Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
- Pull the primary shoe forward and out. Pull the secondary shoe rearward and remove the parking brake shoes and set on bench.
- Remove the brake shoe inner retracting spring.
- Remove the brake adjusting screw.
- Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate the brake shoe contact point before installation of the parking brake shoes using silicone brake caliper grease.
- Use Brake Adjusting Gauge (D81L-1103-A), or equivalent, to measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
- Use Brake Adjusting Gauge to set the rear brake shoe and lining diameter to 0.02" (0.5 mm) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the brake disc.
- Burnish the parking brake shoe and linings:
- Accelerate the vehicle to 25 MPH.
- Shift the transmission to Neutral.
- Slowly apply the parking brake control to approximately one-half to three-quarters of its travel.
- Allow the vehicle to come to a complete stop.
- Release the parking brake.
- Verify parking brake operation.
