Test B: Voltmeter Inaccurate

  1. Check battery and charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in CHARGING SYSTEM in ELECTRICAL. If battery and charging system are okay, go to next step. If battery and/or charging system are not okay, repair as necessary.
  2. Ensure all accessories are off. Start engine. Observe voltmeter. If voltmeter reads lower than normal range, go to next step. If voltmeter reads in normal range, go to step  4. If voltmeter reads higher than normal range, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a terminal No. 3 (Red/White wire). See Figure. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair Red/White wire as necessary. Retest system operation.
  4. Start engine. Observe voltmeter. If voltmeter reads in normal range, system is operating properly at this time. If voltmeter does not read in normal range, check for poor connections at bulkhead connector and/or instrument cluster ground connections. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. Retest system operation.
