Test W: Message Center Switch Not Operating Correctly (DTC B1205)
- Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform Message Center Module (MCM) self-test. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1205 is retrieved, go to step 3 . If any other DTCs were retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See MESSAGE CENTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Using NGS, select and monitor MCM PID RESETSW, INFOSW and SETUPSW while pressing each message center button (INFO, SETUP and RESET). If PID does not agree with button position, go to next step. If PID agrees with button position, go to step 5 .
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector C239. Disconnect message center switch 4-pin harness connector. Measure resistance of Gray/Orange wire between instrument cluster harness connector C239 and message center switch harness connector terminal. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C239 terminal No. 7 (Gray/Orange wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and message center switch and 10 k/ohms or more between instrument cluster and ground. If all resistances are as specified, go to next step. If any resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Gray/Orange wire.
- Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between instrument cluster harness connector C239 and message center switch harness connector terminal. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C239 terminal No. 4 (Tan/Orange wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and message center switch and 10 k/ohms or more between instrument cluster and ground. If all resistances are as specified, replace message center switch. If any resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Tan/Orange wire.
- Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they seat correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. Clear DTCs and perform instrument cluster self-test. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
