Test T: Tachometer Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), located beneath instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, select ICM TACHOMETER CONTROL active command. Trigger TCHOMETER active. Adjust scroll knob until TCHMETER reads 50%. Note tachometer reading. Adjust scroll knob until TCHMETER reads 100%. Note tachometer reading. Tachometer should start at zero RPM, move to 3500 RPM (50%), and 7000 RPM (100%). If tachometer operates as specified, repair tachometer circuit to PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If tachometer does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they seat correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. Clear DTCs and perform instrument cluster self-test. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
