Test O: Traction Control Indicator Inoperative (DTC U1043)

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe TRAC ACTIVE indicator. Traction control indicator should illuminate for 3 seconds, then turn off. If traction control indicator operates as specified, go to step  3 . If traction control indicator does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), located beneath instrument panel. Verify that Instrument Cluster Module (ICM) is configured to enable traction control system. If ICM is configured, go to next step. If ICM is not configured, reconfigure ICM. See MODULE CONFIGURATION  under PROGRAMMING.
  3. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If DTC U1043 is retrieved, repair anti-lock brake concern. See ANTI-LOCK/TRACTION CONTROL - WINDSTAR article in BRAKES. If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS.
  4. Using NGS tester, select ICM WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger ALL LAMPS active. Observe TRAC active and TRAC OFF indicators. If all indicators illuminate, go to next step. If any indicator does not illuminate, go to step  8 . If TRAC ON indicator is always on, repair anti-lock brake concern. See ANTI-LOCK/TRACTION CONTROL - WINDSTAR article in BRAKES.
  5. Using NGS tester, select and monitor ICM PID TRAC_SW with traction off switch in off and on positions. If PID reading agrees with switch position, go to step  8 . If PID reading does not agree with switch position, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect traction off switch 6-pin harness connector. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and traction off switch harness connector White/Pink wire terminal. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If TRAC OFF indicator illuminates, go to next step. If TRAC OFF indicator does not illuminate, repair open in White/Pink wire between instrument cluster and traction off switch.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and traction off switch harness connector Black wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace traction off switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between traction off switch and ground point. Ground point is located behind left kick panel.
  8. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors, ensuring they seat correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. Clear DTCs and perform instrument cluster self-test. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
