Test X: Message Center Outside Temperature Display Operates Incorrectly (DTC B1254)

  1. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) self-tests. If system passes self-test, go to next step. If system does not pass self-test, and DTC U1041, U1073 or U1123 were retrieved, perform appropriate test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If NO RESP/NOT EQUIP is displayed, repair module concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - WINDSTAR article.
  2. Using NGS tester, perform Front Electronic Module (FEM) self-test. If DTC B1254 is retrieved, go to next step. If any other DTCs were retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See FRONT ELECTRONIC MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to step  6 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ambient temperature sensor 2-pin harness connector and FEM 22-pin harness connector C191. Measure resistance of Red/Light Blue wire between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 and ambient temperature sensor harness connector terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire.
  4. Measure resistance of Light Blue/Orange wire between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 9 and ambient temperature sensor terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Orange wire.
  5. Measure voltage between ground and FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 9 (Light Blue/Orange wire). Measure voltage between ground and FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire). See Figure . If voltage exists at any terminal, repair short to voltage in Light Blue/Orange wire and/or Red/Light Blue wire. If voltage does not exist at all terminals, replace ambient temperature sensor.
  6. Measure resistance of Red/Light Blue wire between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 and ambient temperature sensor harness connector terminal. Measure resistance of Light Blue/Orange wire between FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 9 and ambient temperature sensor harness connector terminal. If all resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Red/Light Blue wire.
  8. Measure voltage between ground and FEM harness connector C191 terminal No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire). If voltage does not exist, connect FEM and ambient temperature sensor and go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Red/Light Blue wire.
  9. Using NGS tester, select and monitor FEM PID EXTTEMP. If FEM PID EXTTEMP agrees with outside air temperature, go to next step. If FEM PID EXTTEMP does not agree with outside air temperature, replace ambient temperature sensor.
  10. Disconnect all FEM harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all FEM harness connectors, ensuring they seat correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace FEM. Clear DTCs and perform FEM self-test. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
