Using Scan Tool

NOTE: Tests included in this article are written specifically for New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu. Using NGS tester, perform data link diagnostic test. If NGS tester responds with CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), perform TEST AA: NO COMMUNICATION WITH GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Instrument Cluster Module (ICM), perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE under SYSTEM TESTS.

If NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform ICM and GEM self-tests.
