Removal (LS)

NOTE: Center "U" joint is staked to the yoke and is not removable. Rear drive shaft assembly must be replaced as a unit. See Fig 2 .
CAUTION: Ensure assembly in the exact same location by placing index marks on bolt, nut, washer, flex coupling and pinion flange with paint or marker. Using a different color marker, mark the second bolt, nut and washer that retain drive shaft and flex coupling to pinion flange. Do not mark third bolt, nut, and washer that retain flex coupling to pinion flange. These fasteners are balance weights. Always assemble them in their original position. Failure to do so can cause noise/vibration harshness.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove body brace. Remove heat shield bolts. Index mark components. Remove 3 nuts, bolts and washers from differential pinion flange.
  2. Using Drive shaft Coupler Torquing Wrenches (205-474), loosen length adjustment nut. See Fig 1 . Remove three nuts, bolts and washers from transmission pinion flange.

  3. Slide front shaft assembly rearward. Tighten length adjusting nut. Remove bolts and spacers from carrier bearing. Remove drive shaft assembly from vehicle.
