Drive Shaft Balance (LS)
NOTE:
Final drive shaft balance occurs with complete drive train assembly at vehicle assembly by attaching weighted color-coded nuts to axle flex coupling bolts. Always install drive shaft flex coupling bolts with head of bolt seated against flange and nuts seated against flex coupling.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove body brace. Remove bolts retaining heat shield. Move heat shield as far forward as possible and secure. Remove rear wheels and tires. Install and tighten wheel lug nuts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower vehicle. Open hood to provide additional cooling. Turn off traction control (if equipped). Have an assistant get in driver seat. Raise vehicle. Have assistant accelerate to speed where imbalance is most noticeable.
- Insert a suitable marker into a 12" (305 mm) long piece of plastic pipe. Using heat shield lip as a brace, move marker towards drive shaft in an area clear of balance weld weights, until it just contacts and marks drive shaft. Have assistant stop accelerating and shut off engine.
- With drive shaft stationary, observe mark on drive shaft. If mark is less than 360 degrees indicates an imbalance. If mark is 360 degrees, there is no imbalance (or pressure applied to marker was too great). If mark indicates an imbalance, proceed with balance procedure.
- Locate bolt in flex coupling opposite of mark. Install a 2.75 gram (Silver) weighted nut onto this bolt. This is light side of drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFT BALANCE NUT SELECTION (LS)

If new mark is 360 degrees, reinstall all components and road test vehicle. If vibration is still apparent, remove 2.75 gram (Silver) weighted nut and install a 5.6 gram (Green) weighted nut and repeat marking procedure in step 3 and go to next step.
- With drive shaft stationary, observe mark on drive shaft. If new mark is 360 degrees, reinstall all components and road test vehicle. If vibration is still apparent, move weighted nut to adjacent bolt and repeat marking procedure in step 3 . If condition does not improve, install new drive shaft assembly.
- Retest using marker and weighted nuts as necessary. When best possible condition is met , reinstall all components and road test vehicle.
WARNING:
Keep hands, hair, head and clothing clear of rotating parts and hot exhaust components.
CAUTION:
DO NOT exceed 70 MPH.
