Test P: Charge System Indicator Inoperative/Always On

  1. Check charging system operation. See GENERATORS & REGULATORS - MUSTANG article. If charging system is operating properly, go to next step. If charging system is not operating properly, repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. If charging indicator is illuminated, go to step  5 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator harness connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and generator harness connector Light Green/Red wire terminal. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. If charging indicator is illuminated, repair or replace generator as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 12-pin instrument cluster harness connector C250. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster for access to connector. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Measure resistance in Light Green/Red wire between generator harness connector and instrument cluster harness connector C250 terminal No. 5. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  7 . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging indicator is illuminated, go to next step. If charging indicator is not illuminated, repair or replace generator as necessary.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 12-pin instrument cluster harness connector C250. It may be necessary to remove instrument cluster for access to connector. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Measure resistance between ground and generator harness connector Light Green/Red wire terminal. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect all instrument cluster harness connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If terminals are damaged, repair as necessary. If terminals are not damaged, reconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Ensure instrument cluster harness connectors are seated properly. If problem still exists, replace instrument cluster module.
