Possible Causes

A driver-side air bag module circuit shorted to battery could be caused by a short to battery on Green-Red wire (circuit 15S-JA8), a short to battery on Black-Orange wire (circuit 91S-JA8), a short to battery in clockspring, a short to battery in air bag module or an RCM internal fault.

  1. Check driver-side air bag

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B1916 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1916 is not retrieved, Replace driver-side air bag module. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Repeat on-demand self-test.
  2. Check for short to battery

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C424. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect air bag simulator from upper clockspring connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and RCM harness connector C424, terminals No. 2 (Green-Red wire). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and RCM harness connector C424, terminals No. 3 (Black-Orange wire). If any voltage is present in either test, go to next step. If no voltage is present in both tests, replace RCM. Activate air bag system. Repeat on-demand self-test.
  3. Check clockspring

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and RCM harness connector C424, terminals No. 2 (Green-Red wire). Measure voltage between ground and RCM harness connector C424, terminals No. 3 (Black-Orange wire). If any voltage is present in either test, repair short to voltage in Green-Red or Black-Orange wire as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Activate air bag system. Clear DTCs. Repeat on-demand self-test. If no voltage is present in both tests, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Activate air bag system. Repeat on-demand self-test.
