Description & Operation: Introduction
The 5R44E and 5R55E are electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmissions. Transmissions have the following features: a 4-element torque converter with Torque Converter Clutch (TCC), 3 compound planetary gear sets, 3 bands, 3 multi-plate clutches and 2 one-way clutches. The numbers 44 and 55 within transmission code represent torque capacity of transmission in foot pounds.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls transmission operation through 4 On/Off solenoids for shifting, one Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid for Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) control and one Variable Force Style (VFS) Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid for line pressure control. PCM has built-in self-diagnosis, fail-safe operations mode and warning code display for the main input sensors and solenoid valves.
Input signals from sensors are sent to PCM. PCM can determine when the time and conditions are right for a shift or converter clutch application.
