Test B: Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

  1. Test coolant temperature gauge. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE  under COMPONENT TESTS. If temperature gauge does not perform properly, go to next step. If temperature gauge performs properly, replace temperature gauge sender unit. Recheck system operation.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect temperature gauge sender unit 3-pin harness connector C104. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of Red/White wire between instrument cluster Black harness connector C287 terminal No. 3 and temperature gauge sender harness connector C104 terminal No. 1. See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster Black harness connector C287 terminal No. 3 (Red/White wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and temperature gauge sender unit. Resistance should be more than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short in Red/White wire. Recheck system operation.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster White harness connector C288 terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between instrument cluster connector and fuse No. 11 in Central Junction Box (CJB). Recheck system operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster Black harness connector C287 terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/White wire between instrument cluster connector and ground. Ground point is located in left front of engine compartment, near radiator. Recheck system operation.
  5. Measure resistance between instrument cluster temperature gauge clips "B" and "S". Resistance should be 214-256 ohms. Measure resistance between instrument cluster temperature gauge clips "G" and "S". Resistance should be 90-110 ohms. If resistance readings are as specified, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Check system for normal operation. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If any resistance reading is not as specified, replace temperature gauge. Recheck system operation. See GAUGES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
