Test W: Seat Belt Warning Indicator Does Not Operate Properly

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, select GEM PID IGN_GEM from PID/DATA monitor menu. Monitor PID while turning ignition key to each position. On models with manual transmission, ensure clutch is depressed while turning ignition key to start. On all models, if PID values agree with key positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with key positions, repair power distribution circuit. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Using NGS tester, perform GEM module self-test. If no DTCs exist, or DTC B1428 exists, go to next step. If DTC B1342 exists, replace GEM. GEM is located behind center of instrument panel. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If DTC B1426 exists, go to step  9 . If DTC B1462 exists, check for open or short in seat belt warning switch circuits. See WARNING SYSTEMS article.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Check seat belt warning chime operation. Chime should sound for 4-8 seconds with seat belt unbuckled. If seat belt warning chime operates properly, Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and go to next step. If seat belt warning chime is not operating properly, check for open or short in seat belt warning switch circuits. See WARNING SYSTEMS article.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, select GEM PID SBLTLMP from PID/DATA monitor menu. Monitor PID and toggle active command SBLT LAMP to ON then OFF. If PID value indicates ON when active command is ON and OFF when active command is OFF, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If PID value indicates OFFO-G, go to next step. If PID value indicates ON-B, go to step  10 .
  5. Check fuel gauge operation. If fuel gauge operates properly, go to step  7 . If fuel gauge does not operate properly, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster Black 12-pin harness connector C287 terminal No. 8 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure . If more than 10 volts exist, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire. Recheck system operation.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C288 terminal No. 10 (component side) and instrument cluster connector C287 terminal No. 8 (component side). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, check seat belt warning indicator bulb in instrument cluster. Replace bulb as necessary and recheck system operation. If bulb is okay, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  8. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C280. GEM connector C280 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between GEM harness connector C280 terminal No. 12 and instrument cluster White 10-pin harness connector C288 terminal No. 10. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and GEM 26-pin harness connector C280 terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow wire between GEM, belt minder module (late build models) and instrument cluster. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C280. GEM connector C280 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C280 terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire). If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  11. Using NGS tester, select GEM PID SBLTLMP from PID/DATA monitor menu. Monitor PID and set active command ajar light OFF. If PID value indicates OFFO-G, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If PID value does not indicate OFFO-G, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
