Test X: 4WD High Or 4WD Low Indicator Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, select GEM PID IGN_GEM from PID/DATA monitor menu. Monitor PID while turning ignition key to each position. On models with manual transmission, ensure clutch is depressed while turning ignition key to start. On all models, if PID values agree with key positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with key positions, repair power distribution circuit. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Using NGS tester, perform GEM module self-test. If no DTCs or DTC P1804, P1806, P1808 or P1810 exist, go to next step. If DTC B1342 exists, replace GEM. GEM is located behind center of instrument panel. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  3. If 4WD HIGH indicator is inoperative, go to step  7 . If 4WD LOW indicator is inoperative, go to step  13 . If 4WD HIGH and 4WD LOW indicators are inoperative, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Verify O/D OFF indicator operation. O/D OFF indicator should be on when transmission control switch is depressed and ignition switch is in RUN position. If O/D OFF indicator operates properly, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If O/D OFF indicator does not operate properly, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C286 terminal No. 5 (Orange/Black wire). SeeFigure . If more than 10 volts exist, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If 10 volts or less exist, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect headlight switch 11-pin harness connector C216. Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C286 terminal No. 5 and headlight switch 11-pin harness connector C216 terminal No. 8. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C286 terminal No. 5 (Orange/Black wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and headlight switch, and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short in Orange/Black wire. Recheck system operation. If resistance is as specified, fault exists between headlight switch and fuse No. 11 in Central Junction Box (CJB). Repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, select GEM PID 4WDHIGH. Monitor PID and toggle active command HIGH LAMP to ON then OFF. The 4WD HIGH indicator should illuminate, then turn off. If 4WD HIGH indicator operates properly, go to appropriate TRANSFER CASES article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS or MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS to diagnose transfer case concern. If 4WD HIGH indicator does not operate properly and PID 4WDHIGH indicates OFFO-G, go to next step. If 4WD HIGH indicator does not operate properly and PID 4WDHIGH indicates ON-B-, go to step  11 .
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 22-pin harness connector C282. GEM connector C282 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Connect a fused (7.5-amp) jumper wire between ground and GEM harness connector C282 terminal No. 14 (Gray wire). See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If 4WD HIGH indicator illuminates, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If 4WD HIGH indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  9. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove 4WD HIGH indicator bulb and check for continuity between bulb terminals. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  10. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of Gray wire between GEM 22-pin harness connector C282 terminal No. 14 and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C286 terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  11. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, monitor GEM PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle active command HIGH LAMP to ON then OFF. If PID value indicates ON-B-, go to next step. If PID value does not indicate ON-B-, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  12. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 22-pin harness connector C282. GEM connector C282 is located behind center of instrument cluster. Measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C282 terminal No. 14 (Gray wire). If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation. If voltage does not exist, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and recheck system operation.
  13. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor GEM PID 4WDLOW. Toggle active command LOW LAMP to ON then OFF. 4WD LOW indicator should illuminate, then turn off. If 4WD LOW indicator operates properly, repair transfer case concern. See appropriate TRANSFER CASES article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS or MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. If 4WD LOW indicator does not operate properly and PID 4WDLOW indicates OFFO-G, go to next step. If 4WD LOW indicator does not operate properly and PID 4WDLOW indicates ON-B-, go to step  17 .
