Test Z: Water In Fuel Warning Indicator Inoperative (Diesel)
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect water in fuel switch 2-pin harness connector C158. Connector C158 is located in center of engine compartment, on fuel heater. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and Gray/Red wire terminal at water in fuel switch 2-pin harness connector C158. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If WATER IN FUEL indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If WATER IN FUEL indicator illuminates, replace water in fuel switch. retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin harness connector C1027. PCM is located on left side of firewall. Measure resistance of Gray/Red wire between water in fuel switch 2-pin harness connector C158 and PCM 104-pin harness connector C1027 terminal No. 36. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Red wire between water in fuel switch and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 104-pin harness connector C1027 terminal No. 28 (Red wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If WATER IN FUEL indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If WATER IN FUEL indicator illuminates, diagnose PCM problem. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A. Measure resistance of Red wire between instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A terminal No. 21 and PCM 104-pin harness connector C1027 terminal No. 28. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red wire between instrument cluster and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Remove instrument cluster to gain access to WAIT TO START indicator bulb. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Remove bulb. Test bulb for continuity. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb. Retest system operation. If bulb is okay, replace instrument cluster. Retest system operation.
