Test O: Air Bag Warning Indicator Always/Never On

WARNING: To avoid accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury, backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any air bag restraint system components. Disconnect battery and auxiliary power supplies (if equipped). Wait one minute for backup power supply energy to deplete.
NOTE: Air bag diagnostic monitor may also be referred to as air bag diagnostic module, Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) or Restraints Control Module (RCM).
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to ON position while observing air bag indicator prove out. If air bag indicator prove out is normal, system is okay. If air bag indicator stays on, go to next step. If air bag indicator does not come on during prove out, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor 28-pin harness connector C223. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If air bag indicator illuminates, repair Black/Yellow wire as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If air bag indicator does not illuminate, repair air bag system problem. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  3. Check Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse No. 29 (5-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse. Retest system operation. If fuse blows again, repair White/Yellow wire as necessary between instrument cluster and air bag diagnostic monitor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  4. Verify instrument cluster harness connectors are fully seated. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . If instrument cluster harness connectors are fully seated, go to next step. If instrument cluster harness connectors are not fully seated, correctly seat harness connectors. Retest system operation.
  5. Remove air bag indicator bulb. Check air bag indicator bulb continuity. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb. Retest system operation.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A terminal No. 7 (White/Yellow wire). See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in White/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and central junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor 28-pin harness connector C223. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A. Measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A terminal No. 6 and air bag diagnostic monitor 28-pin harness connector C223 terminal No. 7. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and air bag diagnostic monitor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  8. Reconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A. Reconnect battery ground cable. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and air bag diagnostic monitor 28-pin harness connector C223 terminal No. 7 (Black/Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If air bag indicator illuminates, replace air bag diagnostic monitor. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Retest system operation. If air bag indicator does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Retest system operation.
