Test G: Engine Temperature Gauge Reads Incorrectly

NOTE: Ensure engine coolant is at proper level and that Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sender 2-pin harness connector C150 is securely attached.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sender 2-pin harness connector C150. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If temperature gauge does not read in cold band, go to next step. If temperature gauge reads in cold band, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and Red/White wire terminal at ECT sender 2-pin harness connector C150. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step  4. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Red/White wire between instrument cluster and ECT sender. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  3. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ECT sender harness 2-pin connector C150 terminals. If temperature gauge does not read in hot band, go to next step. If temperature gauge reads in hot band, remove jumper wire. Reconnect ECT sender 2-pin harness connector C150. Start vehicle and allow engine to reach operating temperature. If gauge is not in normal range, replace ECT sender. Retest system operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and Yellow/Red wire terminal at ECT sender 2-pin harness connector C150. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Red wire between ECT sender and ground point. Ground point is located behind left kick panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
  5. Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to instrument cluster harness connectors. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B. Measure resistance of Red/White wire between ECT sender 2-pin harness connector C150 and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B terminal No. 8. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. Retest system operation. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red/White wire between instrument cluster and ECT sender. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
