Test B: All Gauges Inoperative
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe instrument cluster warning indicators. Turn ignition switch to START position. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON, battery, safety belt, brake and Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) system indicators do not prove out, go to next step. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON, battery, safety belt, brake and ABS indicators prove out, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. On Excursion, remove and check Central Junction Box (CJB) fuses No. 2 (5-amp), No. 19 (10-amp) and No. 29 (5-amp). On F250-F550 Super Duty Pickups, remove and check CJB fuses No. 15 (5-amp), No. 19 (10-amp) and No. 29 (5-amp). On all models, if all fuses are okay, reinstall fuses and go to next step. If any fuse is blown, replace fuse. Retest system operation. If fuse blows again, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See appropriate POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Retest system operation.
- Verify instrument cluster harness connectors are connected correctly. Partial removal of instrument cluster is necessary. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Verify instrument cluster harness connector between instrument cluster printed circuit and instrument cluster is connected correctly. If all harness connectors are connected correctly, go to next step. If any harness connectors are not connected correctly, reconnect harness connectors. Retest system operation.
- Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C250A terminals No. 7 (White/Yellow wire) and No. 12 (Red/Yellow wire). Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B terminals No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire) and No. 14 (Red/White wire on Excursion; Light Blue/Black wire on F250-F550 Super Duty Pickups). See Fig 1 and Fig 2
. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in appropriate wire between instrument cluster and CJB. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C250B terminal No. 12 (Pink/Orange wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, and instrument cluster printed circuit harness connector is fully seated, replace instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Orange wire between instrument cluster and ground point. Ground point is located behind driver's kick panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
