Test C: TCC Solenoid

  1. Electronic Diagnostics

With ignition switch in OFF position and gearshift lever in "P" position, check transaxle wiring harness and connector. Ensure terminals are in good condition. Repair as necessary. Install NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Follow on screen directions to ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Enter OUTPUT TEST MODE (OTM) ALL ON and activate outputs using scan tool. If vehicle enters OTM, go to next step. If vehicle will not enter OTM, OTM is not functioning. See SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH PCM  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  2. Check Electrical Signal Operation

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between transaxle harness connector terminal No. 7 and ground. See Figure . While monitoring DVOM, press START, and then STOP on scan tool to cycle solenoid output on and off. If voltage changes at least .2 volt, go to step  5 . If voltage does not change at least .2 volt, go to next step.
  3. Check TCC Solenoid Circuit Continuity

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM connector. Check PCM harness and connector. Ensure terminals are in good condition. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box to PCM harness connector and leave PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle harness connector terminal No. 7 and breakout box terminal No. 54. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING and ensure no DTCs exist.
  4. NOTE: Breakout box terminals No. 51 and 91 are ground circuits, terminals No. 71 and 97 are power circuits.

  5. Check Solenoid Circuit For Short To Power Or Ground
Using DVOM, measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 54 and terminals No. 51, 71, 91, 97 and ground. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If any measured resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short in affected circuit. Repeat QUICK TEST  and ensure no DTCs exist.
  6. Check TCC Solenoid/Harness Resistance

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle connector terminal No. 7 and ground. See Figure . Resistance should be 12-20 ohms. If resistance is as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING in FORD F4E-III (MAZDA FA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article. If resistance is not as specified, replace valve body. See VALVE BODY under ON-VEHICLE SERVICE in FORD F4E-III (MAZDA FA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article.
