Test A: Shift Solenoid Circuit

  1. Electronic Diagnostics

    With ignition switch in OFF position and gearshift lever in "P" position, check transaxle wiring harness and connector. Ensure terminals are in good condition. Repair as necessary. Install NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Follow on screen directions to ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Using scan tool, enter OUTPUT TEST MODE (OTM). Select ALL ON, push START and activate outputs. If vehicle enters OTM, remain in OTM and go to next step. If vehicle will not enter OTM, OTM is not functioning. See SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH PCM  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  2. Check Signal Operation

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect transaxle wiring connector. Check transaxle wiring harness and connector. Ensure terminals are in good condition. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect DVOM leads between transaxle harness connector terminals No. 3, 4, 8 and ground. See Fig 1 . While monitoring voltage on DVOM, cycle solenoid output on and off with scan tool. If each circuits output voltage changes at least .2 volt, go to step  5 . If any circuits output voltage does not change at least .2 volt, go to next step.
  3. Check Continuity Of Solenoid Signal Circuits

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM connector and ensure connector and terminals are in good condition. Install breakout box to PCM wiring harness connector and leave PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle harness connector terminals No. 3, 4, 8 and breakout box terminals No. 53, 27, and 1, respectively. See Fig 1 . If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is not less than 5 ohms, repair open in affected circuit. Reconnect all connectors and repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  4. NOTE: Breakout box terminals No. 51 and 91 are ground circuits, terminals No. 71 and 97 are power circuits.

  5. Check Solenoid Circuit For Short To Power Or Ground
    Using DVOM, measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 1, 27, 53 and breakout box terminals No. 51, 71, 91, 97 and ground. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Reconnect all connectors and repeat QUICK TEST  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If any resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair affected short circuit. Reconnect all connectors and repeat QUICK TEST  .
  6. Check Internal Solenoid/Harness Resistance

    Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle connector terminals No. 3, 4, 8 and ground. See Fig 1 . Resistance should be 12-20 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace valve body. See VALVE BODY under ON-VEHICLE SERVICE in FORD F4E-III (MAZDA FA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article. If resistance is as specified, diagnose problem by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING in FORD F4E-III (MAZDA FA4A-EL) OVERHAUL article.
