Removal (Focus)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Center steering wheel. Remove ignition key and lock steering in position. Remove screws, and release fastener. Remove instrument panel lower panel. Remove bolt and release steering column shaft from pinion extension.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove tire and wheel assembly. Remove tie rod end retaining nuts. Using Tie Rod End Remover (Tool-3290-D), separate tie rod ends from wheel knuckles. Wrap ball joint seals in cloth to prevent contamination. Detach stabilizer bar links from strut and spring assemblies.
- Insert Spring Lock Coupling (T90T-9550-C) into hose quick release coupling. Move spring lock coupling along pipe to release locking tangs. Allow fluid to drain into suitable container. Remove support insulator to transaxle center bolt. Remove heat shield.
- Detach power steering hose from steering gear by removing bolt and rotating clamp plate. Allow fluid to drain into suitable container. Using suitable jack, support crossmember. Remove crossmember bolts, and lower crossmember. Remove steering column coupling shaft and floor seal by moving floor seal upward, and removing bolt. Remove steering gear.
