Test M: Safety Belt Warning Indicator Does Not Operate Correctly

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If safety belt warning indicator illuminates, go to step  5 . If safety belt warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If safety belt warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If safety belt warning indicator does not illuminate, go to step  4 .
  3. Buckle safety belt. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wait 30 seconds for safety belt warning indicator to stop illuminating (prove out). If safety belt warning indicator does not stop illuminating, go to step  9 . If safety belt warning indicator stops illuminating, system is working properly at this time.
  4. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester. With GEM in active command mode, select WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME. Trigger the GEM SBLT LAMP ON. If safety belt warning indicator illuminates, go to step  13 . If safety belt warning indicator does not illuminate, go to step  7 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C201c. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If safety belt warning indicator is illuminated, go to next step. If safety belt warning indicator is not illuminated, go to step  13 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C220a. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 13 (Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C220a. If battery voltage is present, repair short to power in Yellow wire. If battery voltage is not present, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM module harness connector C201b. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 19 (Yellow wire) at GEM module harness connector C201b. If battery voltage is present, go to step  13 . If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C220a. Measure resistance between terminal No. 19 (Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector and terminal No. 13 (Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow wire between GEM module and instrument cluster.
  9. Connect NGS tester. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select RCM PID DSBELT while buckling and unbuckling driver safety belt. If PID responds correctly, go to next step. If PID does not respond correctly, check air bag restraint system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and then to RUN position. Connect NGS tester. In command mode, trigger the SAFETY BELT WARNING CHIME. If chime sounds, go to next step. If chime does not sound, check air bag restraint system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  11. Disconnect GEM harness connector C201c. See Fig 1 . If safety belt indicator light remains illuminated, go to next step. If safety belt light does not remain illuminated, go to step  13 .
  12. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C220a. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 13 (Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C220a. If resistance reading is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair Yellow wire for short to ground and retest.
  13. Check connectors for corrosion, pushed-out pins and ensure connectors are seated properly. Correct any problems found. Operate system and verify concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace GEM module and retest. See appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article. If system is now operating correctly, problem may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
