System Tests (Evaporative Emissions): Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 30 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Sable, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2001 Mercury Cougar, and 2001 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Evaporative emission diagnostic procedures for 2001 Cougar are not available from manufacturer.
NOTE: Prior to performing any system test, see HOW TO USE SYSTEM TESTS under SYSTEM TESTS. If instructed to replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM) after performing a system test, new PCM must be programmed. See PROGRAMMING PCM .

Perform these tests when instructed during QUICK TEST or if directed here from DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS table. Perform appropriate system test, see EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REFERENCE  table.
