Removal (Continental, 3.0L 4V - Sable & Taurus)
- Remove battery. Disconnect Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Disconnect breather tubes. Remove engine air cleaner. Remove air filter assembly. Remove battery tray. Disconnect electrical connectors on transmission. Remove electrical connector bracket.
- Remove manual control lever cable nut. Remove shift actuator cable filling from shift cable and bracket. Disconnect power steering sensor connector. Disconnect power steering harness and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector. Disconnect wire connector and remove it from shift cable bracket. Disconnect Turbine Speed Sensor (TSS).
- Remove top 4 transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove nut for cooling tube. Install engine lifting bracket. Remove right wiper arm. Remove upper cowl assembly clips. Remove upper cowl assembly. Remove lower cowl assembly. Remove rear support brace. Install rear engine lifting bracket in the same location where the top bolt was from rear support brace.
- Install a 3 Bar Engine Support. Raise vehicle. Drain transmission fluid by lowering transaxle pan. Disconnect front HO2S sensor connector. Disconnect rear HO2S sensor connector. Remove front flange nuts from front catalytic converter assembly. Remove rear flange bolts from front catalytic converter assembly. Remove the brace nut from rear catalytic converter assembly. Remove rear catalytic converter assembly.
- Remove front subframe:
- Support exhaust system to one side under vehicle. If equipped, remove 5 pin-type retainers from chin spoiler. Remove air dam. Remove front wheels and tires. Remove 2 lower ball joint nuts. Using special tools, disconnect ball joint from lower control arm. Push lower arm downward until ball joint is free or arm.
- Remove 2 nuts and disconnect front stabilizer bar links. Support steering gear to prevent damage to steering shaft. Remove steering gear nuts. Remove 4 bolts holding power steering line to frame. Remove RH front engine mount nut. Remove RH rear engine mount nut. Remove transmission insulator support bracket bolts from frame.
- Remove pin-type retainers from RH subframe splash shield. Using suitable support table, support subframe. Make sure all hoses and steering gear assembly are clear of subframe to prevent damage to these components when lowering subframe. Remove 4 subframe bolts and lower subframe from vehicle.
- When installing the bolts, they need to be tightened in sequence starting with LH front, RH front, and both rear bolts.
WARNING: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten nut, or bearing and seal damage can result. Install nut using hex hold feature to prevent stud from rotating. - Using special tools, remove LH and RH halfshafts from the transaxle and position out of the way. Remove battery ground cable nut. Remove starter motor. Remove cooler line retaining clips. Depress tabs on plastic insert retainer and remove cooler lines from fitting.
- Remove transmission housing cover (torque converter nut access). Remove and discard 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Position High Lift Transmission Jack under transaxle. Remove lower transaxle retaining bolts. Remove support bracket. Lower transaxle assembly from engine compartment.
NOTE:
The use of mechanics wire will aid in positioning halfshafts out of the way.
