Removal (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mustang & Town Car)
- Turn off air suspension switch, if equipped. Place transmission in Neutral. Disconnect battery. Raise and support vehicle. Remove torque converter access cover adapter plate bolts and plate from lower left side of torque converter housing. Remove access cover plug from left rear side of engine block. Drain transmission fluid, including torque converter. Place reference marks on torque converter and drive plate for reassembly reference. Remove 4 torque converter-to-drive plate nuts through access cover plug hole. Turn crankshaft clockwise to access nuts.
- Mark position of drive shaft yokes, and remove drive shaft. Disconnect and remove electrical harness from sensors and brackets. Remove starter. Position transmission jack under transmission, and secure with strap.
- Disconnect gearshift linkage and transmission cooler lines. Disconnect oxygen sensor connectors. Remove rear mount-to-crossmember bolts and crossmember-to-frame bolts.
- Remove dual catalytic converter "Y" pipe. Remove bellhousing bolts. Remove filler tube from transmission. Slide transmission toward rear of vehicle, and remove.
