Removal (3.0L 4V - Sable & Taurus)

  1. Remove the battery. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
  2. Disconnect the breather tubes. Remove the engine air cleaner. See Figure. Remove the air filter assembly. See Figure.
  3. Remove the battery tray. See Figure. Disconnect the connectors. See Figure and Figure .
  4. Remove the electrical connector and the wiring harness from the bracket.
  5. Remove the manual control lever cable. Remove the nut. Remove the shift actuator cable fitting from the shift cable and bracket. See Figure.
  6. Disconnect the power steering sensor connector.
  7. Disconnect the power steering harness and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector.
  8. Disconnect the wiring harness from the shift cable bracket.
  9. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor. See Figure.
  10. Remove the bolt and nut from the coolant pipe bracket. Remove the bolts. See Figure.
  11. Remove the nut for the cooling tube. Install the engine lifting bracket.
  12. Remove the wiper. Remove the clips. Remove the upper cowl assembly.
  13. Remove the lower cowl assembly. Remove the three screws. Remove the clip.
  14. Remove the bolt. Remove the nut. Remove the rear support brace.
  15. Install the rear engine lifting bracket in the same location where the top bolt was removed from the rear support brace.
  16. Install the 3 bar engine support.
    17. NOTE: It may be easier to access the nuts for the exhaust flange from the engine compartment.
  17. Remove the front nuts from the front catalytic converter assembly.
  18. Raise the vehicle. Drain the transaxle fluid by lowering the transaxle pan. Disconnect the front and rear HO2S sensor connector.
  19. Remove the rear bolts from the front catalytic converter assembly.
  20. Remove the nut from the rear catalytic converter assembly.
  21. Remove the rear catalytic converter and cross over pipe assembly.
    22. CAUTION: If the steering gear is removed with the subframe, do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be recentered before the vehicle is driven.
    NOTE: The use of mechanic's wire will aid in positioning the half shaft out of the way.
  22. Remove the sub frame assembly. Using the Slide Hammer (100-001) and Half Shaft Remover (205-241), remove the LH and RH half shaft from the transaxle and position out of the way. See Figure.
  23. Remove the nut and the battery ground cable.
  24. Remove the starter motor. Remove the cooler line retaining clips. See Figure.
  25. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove the cooler lines from the fitting. See Figure.
  26. Remove the transaxle housing cover. Remove and discard the four torque converter to flexplate nuts.
  27. Position the high lift transaxle jack under the transaxle. See Figure. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts. See Figure.
  28. Remove the support bracket. Remove the nuts. Remove the bolts. Remove the bracket.
  29. Lower the transaxle assembly from the engine compartment. Remove the rear engine support mount. Remove the bracket. See Figure.
  30. Remove the wiring harness bracket from the transaxle. Carry out transaxle fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning.
