Installation (3.0L 4V - Sable & Taurus)
- Install the rear engine support bracket and bolts, if equipped. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the bracket. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the wiring harness bracket to the transaxle. Install the transaxle. Position the transaxle on a high lift jack. Apply multi-purpose grease to the torque converter pilot hub. See Figure.
- Install the transaxle retaining bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the bolt. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the retaining bracket. Install the nuts. Install the bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install 4 NEW torque to flexplate nuts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the transaxle housing cover.
- Depress the tabs on the plastic retainers and install the cooler lines. See Figure. Install the cooler line retaining clips. See Figure.
- Install the starter motor. Install the battery ground cable and nut. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the LH and RH half shaft. See Figure and Figure .
- Install the subframe assembly. Install the rear catalytic converter and cross over pipe assembly. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the nut for the rear catalytic converter assembly. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the bolts for the front catalytic converter assembly. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Reconnect the rear and front HO2S sensor connector.
- Lower the vehicle. Install the nuts for the front catalytic converter assembly. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the 3 bar engine support. Remove the engine lifting bracket.
- Install the rear support brace. Install the bolt. Install the nut. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the lower cowl assembly. Install the three screws. Install the clip.
- Install the upper cowl assembly. Install the clips. Install the wiper.
- Remove the engine lifting bracket. Install the nut for the cooling tube. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the bolts. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the nut and bolt for the coolant pipe bracket. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Reconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor. See Figure. Reconnect the wiring harness to the shift cable bracket.
- Reconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector. Reconnect the power steering sensor connector.
- Verify that the digital Transaxle Range (TR) sensor is correctly adjusted. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under ADJUSTMENTS in SERVICING article.
- Install the manual control lever cable and nut. Install the manual control lever cable into the bracket. See Figure. Tighten the nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the electrical connector and wiring harness to the bracket.
- Reconnect the connector. See Figure and Figure . Install the battery tray. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the air filter assembly. See Figure. Install the engine air cleaner. See Figure.
- Reconnect the breather tubes. Reconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Install the battery. Fill the transaxle using clean automatic transaxle fluid. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS and FLUID CAPACITIES under LUBRICATION in SERVICING article.
- Start the engine. Move the transaxle range selector lever through all positions. Check the fluid level. See CHECKING FLUID LEVELS under LUBRICATION in SERVICING article.
NOTE:
Locate and align the orange dot adjacent to the stud on the torque converter and place it in the 6 o'clock position.
CAUTION:
If the steering gear was removed with the subframe and there is evidence that the steering column intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be recentered before the vehicle is driven or damage to the clockspring can result.
NOTE:
It may be easier to access the nuts from the engine compartment.
