Removal (Focus)

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery tray. Disconnect Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor. Remove air inlet and housing. Using Allen wrench, prevent strut piston rod from turning. Loosen upper strut mounting nuts five turns. Remove intake tube.
  2. Disconnect Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor. Disconnect gearshift cable. Remove upper starter bolts. Install appropriate 3-bar engine support fixture. Remove fluid filler pipe bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove left front wheel. Remove exhaust pipe and bracket. Remove right engine support. Remove axle shafts. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
  3. Disconnect output shaft speed sensor. Remove torque converter cover. Place reference marks on torque converter and drive plate for reassembly reference. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate nuts. Remove upper flange bolts. Remove rear engine mounting bolts. Lower engine and transaxle slightly to remove rear engine mounting bracket. Remove fluid filler pipe. Remove flange bolts. Separate transaxle from engine. Install Torque Converter Holder (T97T-7902-A), and remove transaxle.
