Steering Knuckle: Removal

  1. Turn ignition to OFF position. Ensure steering column is not locked. Remove and discard hub nut. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assembly. Remove wiring from strut. Remove and discard cotter pin and slotted nut from tie rod end stud. Using Tie Rod Remover (TOOL-3290-D) and Adapter (T81P-3504-W), separate tie rod end from steering knuckle. DO NOT damage tie rod end seal.
  2. Remove stabilizer bar link assembly from strut. Remove brake caliper and caliper anchor plate assembly, and wire aside. Remove rotor. Remove anti-lock brakes sensor bolt and sensor.
  3. Remove and discard lower control arm-to-steering knuckle nut. Compress front coil spring until lower ball joint clears lower control arm. Without using hammer, separate ball joint from lower control arm. DO NOT damage lower ball joint seal.
    CAUTION: DO NOT over-extend drive axle shaft during removal, as CV joint components may separate.
  4. Remove strut-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. Remove drive axle shaft from hub, and wire to body to maintain a level position. Remove front steering knuckle assembly from strut. Place steering knuckle assembly on bench. Using a pry bar to steady assembly, remove 3 retaining bolts. Remove hub from steering knuckle by prying between retainer and steering knuckle. DO NOT use slide hammer for this step.
