Steering Wheel & Horn Pad: Removal

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable, and wait one minute for backup power supply energy to deplete. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  before removing steering wheel.
  2. Pry open access door on side of steering wheel. Disconnect accessory and air bag module electrical connectors. Using anti-theft socket (501-052), turn pinion shaft 120-130 revolutions to release steering wheel from column shaft. See Figure .
  3. Mark steering wheel and shaft for reassembly reference. Remove steering wheel. Route wiring through small opening in back of steering wheel as it is removed from column shaft. DO NOT damage wiring.
