Test J: Wander

NOTE: Pointing characteristics are normal with the rack-and-pinion steering system up to 10 degrees off-center.

  1. Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear Retaining Bolts Loose Or Damaged

    Tighten or replace bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Improper Front Or Rear End Alignment

    Align to specifications. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES -- CARS article in SUSPENSIONS.
  3. Front Lower Control Arm Ball Sockets Worn

    Service as required. See FRONT -- SABLE & TAURUS article in SUSPENSIONS.
  4. Brindled Or Binding Upper Strut Bearing

    Replace bearing. See FRONT -- SABLE & TAURUS article in SUSPENSIONS.
  5. Steering Wheel Clear Vision Off Location

    Recenter steering wheel as required.
  6. Column Trim Rubbing Steering Wheel

    Reposition column trim.
  7. Loose Suspension Struts Or Ball Joints Binding

    Adjust or replace components as necessary. See FRONT -- SABLE & TAURUS article in SUSPENSIONS.
  8. Loose Front Wheel Spindle Tie Rods

    Replace tie rod assembly. See FRONT -- SABLE & TAURUS article in SUSPENSIONS.
  9. Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Coupling Connecting Joint Loose or worn

    Tighten bolt to specification. See STEERING COLUMNS -- SABLE & TAURUS article.
  10. Steering Column Misaligned Or Binding

    Correct steering column alignment. See STEERING COLUMNS -- SABLE & TAURUS article.
  11. Tire Rod Inner Ball Socket Worn

    Replace inner tie rod assembly.
  12. Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Coupling Connecting Bolt Loose

    Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  13. Low Tire Pressure Or Incorrect Front-To-Rear Pressures

    Check and adjust tire pressures as necessary.
  14. Incorrect Tire Size Or Type

    Correct tire sizes or types as necessary.
  15. Misaligned Radial Tire Belts

    Replace tires.
  16. Front Wheel Bearing Or Rear Wheel Bearing Worn

    Replace as required. See FRONT -- SABLE & TAURUS or REAR -- SABLE & TAURUS article.
  17. Loose Or Worn Rear Suspension

    Tighten fasteners or replace components as necessary. See REAR -- SABLE & TAURUS article.
  18. Flex Coupling Clamp Bolt Loose

    Tighten bolt to specification. See STEERING COLUMNS -- SABLE & TAURUS article.
  19. Vehicle Loaded Unevenly

    Adjust vehicle loading as necessary.
