Possible Causes

Left-side air bag circuit open or low resistance could be caused by an open or high resistance in White/Light Blue wire (circuit 1257) or Brown/Light Blue wire (circuit 1258), circuits shorted together, damaged left-side air bag module or an RCM internal fault.

  1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC

    Ensure ignition is off. Connect scan tool to DLC. See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B1994 or B1995 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B1994 or B1995 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  5 .
  2. Check left-side air bag module

    Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B1994 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1995 is retrieved, go to step  4 . If DTC B1994 or B1995 is not retrieved, replace left-side air bag module. Go to step  6 .
    CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector.
    NOTE: An extremely low resistance is expected for the following test. Zero ohmmeter before taking measurement.
  3. Check for open in left-side air bag circuit

    Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect both harness connectors. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect air bag simulator from left-side air bag module harness connector. Measure resistance between White/Light Blue and Brown/Light Blue wires on vehicle harness side of left-side air bag harness connector (under-seat). If resistance is more than 1.2 ohms, repair high resistance in White/Light Blue or Brown/Light Blue wires. Go to step  6 . If resistance is less than 1.2 ohms, replace RCM. Go to step  6 .
    CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector.
    NOTE: An extremely low resistance is expected for the following test. Zero ohmmeter before taking measurement.
  4. Check for short in left-side air bag circuit

    Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect both harness connectors. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect air bag simulator from left-side air bag module harness connector. Measure resistance between White/Light Blue and Brown/Light Blue wires on vehicle harness side of left-side air bag harness connector (under-seat). If resistance is less than 0.7 ohm, repair short between White/Light Blue and Brown/Light Blue wires. Go to step  6 . If resistance is more than 0.7 ohm, replace RCM. Go to step  6 .
  5. Check for intermittent fault

    Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If DTC retrieved in step  1 was a intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent low or high resistance on White/Light Blue and Red/Black wires. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step  1 was not a intermittent fault, go to next step.
  6. Check for additional DTCs

    Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Prove out system. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
