Possible Causes

An incorrect vehicle identification code could be caused by an RCM installed on wrong vehicle, an RCM internal fault or wiring problem at terminals No. 7 and 8.

1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC
   
   Ensure ignition is off. Connect scan tool to DLC. See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC C1414 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  4 .
   NOTE: For this vehicle application, RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 7 should be open (no connection) and No. 8 should be grounded.
2. Check voltage at VID terminals No. 1 & 2
   
   Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure voltage between ground and RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 7 and 8. See Figure . If any measurable voltage is present, repair short to voltage at appropriate terminal. Go to step  5 . If no measurable voltage is present, go to next step.
   NOTE: For this vehicle application, RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 7 should be open (no connection) and No. 8 should be grounded.
3. Check ground at VID terminals No. 1 & 2
   
   Measure resistance between ground and RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 7 and 8. See Figure . If terminal No. 7 is open circuit and terminal No. 8 is less than 10 ohms, replace RCM. Go to step  5 . If terminal No. 7 is not open circuit and terminal No. 8 is not less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground at terminal No. 7 or high resistance at terminal No. 8. Go to step  5 .
4. Check for intermittent fault
   
   Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If DTC retrieved in step  1 was a intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent unexpected condition at terminals No. 7 and 8. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step  1 was not a intermittent fault, go to next step.
5. Check for additional DTCs
   
   Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Prove out system. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
