Possible Causes
A driver-side air bag module squib No. 2 circuit open or low resistance could be caused by an open or high resistance on Yellow/White wire (circuit 1516) or Red/Orange wire (circuit 1517), circuits 1516 and 1517 shorted together, driver-side air bag module fault or an RCM internal fault.
- Check for hard or intermittent DTC
Ensure ignition is off. Connect scan tool to DLC. See USING SCAN TOOL under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B2232 or B2234 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B2232 or B2234 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step 7 . - Check driver-side air bag
Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B2234 is retrieved, go to step 5 . If DTC B2232 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B2232 is not retrieved, go to step 4 . If DTC B2234 is not retrieved, go to step 6 .CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310B.NOTE: An extremely low resistance is expected for the following test. Zero ohmmeter before taking measurement. - Check for open in circuit
Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310B. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect air bag simulator from lower clock spring harness connector. Measure resistance between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires on vehicle harness side of lower clock spring connector. If resistance is more than 1.5 ohms, repair high resistance in Yellow/White and/or Red/Orange wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, replace RCM. Go to step 8 .CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310B.NOTE: An extremely low resistance is expected for the following test. Zero ohmmeter before taking measurement. - Check for open in clockspring
Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310B. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect driver-side air bag module connector (upper clockspring connector). Remove air bag simulator from lower clockspring connector and reconnect lower clockspring connector. Measure resistance between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires on vehicle harness side of upper clock spring connector. If resistance is more than 1.5 ohms, repair high resistance in Yellow/White and/or Red/Orange wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, replace driver-side air bag module. Go to step 8 .CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310B.NOTE: An extremely low resistance is expected for the following test. Zero ohmmeter before taking measurement. - Check for low resistance in circuit
Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310B. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove air bag simulator from lower clockspring connector. Measure resistance between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires on vehicle harness side of lower clock spring connector. If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, repair low resistance vehicle harness between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is more than 1.5 ohms, replace RCM. Go to step 8 . - Check for low resistance in clockspring
Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310B. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove air bag simulator from lower clockspring connector and reconnect lower clockspring connector. Disconnect driver-side air bag module connector (upper clockspring connector). Measure resistance between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires on vehicle harness side of upper clock spring connector. If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, repair low resistance clockspring between Yellow/White and Red/Orange wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is more than 1.5 ohms, replace driver-side air bag module. Go to step 8 . - Check for intermittent fault
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If DTC retrieved in step 1 was a intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent low or high resistance on Yellow/White wire, Red/Orange wire and clockspring assembly. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step 1 was not a intermittent fault, go to next step. - Check for additional DTCs
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Prove out system. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS.
