Possible Causes
A driver-side seat belt pretensioner circuit shorted to battery or ground could be caused by a short to battery or ground on Light Green/Red wire (circuit 1079), a short to battery or ground on Light Green/Black wire (circuit 1080), a short to battery or ground in driver-side seat belt pretensioner or an internal RCM fault.
- Check for hard or intermittent DTC
Ensure ignition is off. Connect scan tool to DLC. See USING SCAN TOOL under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B1878 or B1879 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B1878 or B1879 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step 6 . - Check driver-side pretensioner
Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B1878 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1879 is retrieved, go to step 4 . If DTC B1878 or B1879 is not retrieved, go to step 5 .NOTE: While measuring resistance in following test, operate various electrical systems such as radio, windows and blower motor. - Check for short to battery
Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Access RCM and disconnect both harness connectors. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminal No. 1 (White/Yellow wire) and RCM harness connector C310B, terminal No. 15 (Light Green/Red wire). See Figure . Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminal No. 1 (White/Yellow wire) and RCM harness connector C310B, No. 16 (Light Green/Black wire). If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms for either test, repair short to battery on appropriate wire. Go to step 7 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace RCM. Go to step 7 . - Check for short to ground
Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect both harness connectors. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminal No. 10 (Black/Orange wire) and RCM harness connector C310B, terminal No. 15 (Light Green/Red wire). See Figure . Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminal No. 10 (Black/Orange wire) and RCM harness connector C310B, No. 16 (Light Green/Black wire). If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms for either test, repair short to ground on appropriate wire. Go to step 7 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace RCM. Go to step 7 . - Check in-seat harness
Access and disconnect driver-side seat belt pretensioner harness connector. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect fused jumper wire between driver-side seat belt pretensioner harness connector C381, terminals No. 1 (Light Green/Red wire) and No. 3 (Light Green/Black wire). See Fig 1 . Measure resistance between in-seat harness connector C313, terminal No. 9 (Light Green/Black wire) and all other terminals in connector. See Fig 2 . If a short is found only to terminal No. 8 and open to all other terminals, replace driver-side seat belt pretensioner. Go to step. 7). If a short is found to terminals other than No. 8, replace in-seat wire harness. Go to step 7 . - Check for intermittent fault
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If DTC retrieved in step 1 was a intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent short to battery or ground on Light Green/Red wire and Light Green/Black wire. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step 1 was not a intermittent fault, go to next step. - Check for additional DTCs
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Prove out system. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS.
