Possible Causes
A driver-side air bag module squib No. 1 circuit shorted to battery or ground could be caused by a short to battery or ground on Gray/Orange wire (circuit 614), a short to battery or ground on Gray/White wire (circuit 615), a short to battery or ground in clockspring, a short to battery or ground in air bag module or an RCM internal fault.
- Check for hard or intermittent DTC
Ensure ignition is off. Connect scan tool to DLC. See USING SCAN TOOL under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B1887 or B1916 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B1887 or B1916 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step 7 . - Check driver-side air bag
Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B1887 is retrieved, go to step 5 . If DTC B1916 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1887 is not retrieved, go to step 6 . If DTC B1916 is not retrieved, go to step 4 .CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310A.NOTE: While measuring resistance in following test, operate various electrical systems such as radio, windows and blower motor. - Check for short to battery
Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire) and No. 1 (White/Yellow wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to battery on Gray/Orange or White/Yellow wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace RCM. Go to step 8 .CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310A.NOTE: While measuring resistance in following test, operate various electrical systems such as radio, windows and blower motor. - Check for short to battery in clockspring
Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver-side air bag module connector (upper clockspring connector). Remove air bag simulator from lower clockspring connector and reconnect lower clockspring connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire) and No. 1 (White/Yellow wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to battery on clockspring circuit Gray/Orange or Gray/White wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace driver-side air bag module. Go to step 8 .CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310A. - Check for short to ground in clockspring circuit
Turn ignition off. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire) and No. 10 (Black/Orange wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in wiring between RCM and clockspring. Go to step 8 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.CAUTION: DO NOT remove or separate shorting bars from RCM harness connector C310A. - Check for short to ground in clockspring
Turn ignition off. Remove air bag simulator from lower clockspring connector at base of steering column and reconnect lower clockspring connector. Disconnect driver-side air bag module connector (upper clockspring connector) and connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) to clockspring side of upper clockspring connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310A, terminals No. 2 (Gray/Orange wire) and No. 10 (Black/Orange wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground on clockspring circuit Gray/Orange or Gray/White wires. Go to step 8 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace driver-side air bag module. Go to step 8 . - Check for intermittent fault
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If DTC retrieved in step 1 was a intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent short to ground or battery on Gray/Orange wire, Gray/White wire and clockspring assembly. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step 1 was not a intermittent fault, go to next step. - Check for additional DTCs
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS.
